Dr. Dorothea Altschul presented at the 14th annual Society of the NeuroInterventional Surgery (SNIS) conference, held in Colorado Springs, CO, in July 2017. Each presented on topics within their individual areas of study to fellow neurosurgeons, and their abstracts were published in the supplement to the Journal of NeuroInterventional Surgery, distributed at the annual meeting.
The annual SNIS conference is attended by neurologists, neuroradiologists and neurosurgeons who are interested and/or participating in research within the field. By engaging in and learning about the research of their peers, the doctors are able to stay on top of current trends, new scientific developments and incorporate what they have learned into clinical practice.
Top Neurosurgeons Coming Together
The SNIS conference is held annually and features neurosurgeons from across the country sharing their research within the field. In order to participate, the doctors must submit an abstract for acceptance in one of a variety of neurosurgical subjects, including topics such as interventional stroke management, neurocritical care and neuroimaging. If accepted, the doctor will be invited to present his or her research at the annual meeting, helping educate their colleagues about their study findings.
Furthering the Field Through Research
Dr. Altschul presented her abstract, “Prehospital Stroke Notification and Prospective 90-day Functional Outcome in Community Hospital,” at the 14th Annual Meeting. Only a small percentage of SNIS physician members are women, and she is one of only two or three female neurointerventionalist MDs in the entire State of New Jersey. She plays an important role as both a researcher and clinician, particularly for those patients who have personal reasons for specifically seeking out a female doctor.
Dr. Altschul was also the moderator of a conference session titled “Late breaking abstract presentations”, where the newest research was presented.
Contributing to Neurointerventional Care
Dr. Altschul plans to attend the NSIS 15th Annual Conference, held in San Francisco, CA, from July 23-27, 2018. The conference provides an opportunity for the doctors to not only share their own work during the previous year but also to learn from their colleagues and participate in peer-learning experiences.
