About Dr. Ty J. Olson

Dr. Ty J. Olson is a board-certified neurosurgeon and Co-Director of The Gamma Knife Center at Monmouth Medical Center. He specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery and advanced cervical procedures, including disc replacement and fusion. As past-president of the New Jersey State Society of Neurological Surgeons, he is recognized for his leadership in spine care as well as his expertise in treating complex brain tumors and performing Gamma Knife radiosurgery.

Meet Dr. Olson

Dr. Ty J. Olson is one of New Jersey’s leading spine surgeons, recognized for his expertise in addressing complex spinal disorders using minimally invasive approaches that minimize recovery time and enhance outcomes. He also offers advanced care for patients with brain tumors, Chiari malformation, and facial pain syndromes, utilizing techniques such as awake craniotomy and Gamma Knife radiosurgery. Practicing out of the Eatontown and Toms River offices, Dr. Olson provides patients with both surgical and non-surgical options tailored to restore mobility, relieve pain, and enhance quality of life.

Training & Education

Dr. Olson began his study of neuroscience as an undergraduate at Stanford University where he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Neurobiology. While there, Dr. Olson also rowed for the varsity crew all four years of his college career as a scholar-athlete on the Dean’s List. Subsequently, Dr. Olson attended Duke University School of Medicine earning his M.D. While in North Carolina, Dr. Olson conducted research on seizure propagation through the cerebral cortex utilizing optical imaging. Through this work he earned the Talmage Lee Peale award for outstanding research in neurobiology and a grant from the Epilepsy Foundation of America. Dr. Olson then attended and completed his internship in general surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University followed by a residency in neurological surgery at the prestigious Neurological Institute of New York, NYPH, Columbia University.

Following his training, Dr. Olson continued his work at Columbia University Irving Medical Center as an Assistant Clinical Instructor in the Department of Neurological Surgery all the while dedicating himself to helping the people of New Jersey working for the Neurosurgical Associates of New Jersey in Long Branch, NJ. Dr. Olson is a fully-certified diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of many national and state neurosurgical organizations including: the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the North American Skull Base Society, the AANS/CNS joint sections of both Spine and Tumors, the New Jersey State Society of Neurological Surgery, the Trigeminal Neuralgia Facial Pain Association and the Society for Neuro-Oncology.

Dr. Olson has been a trustee of the Sharing Network in New Jersey and currently serves as a trustee of the Monmouth Medical Center Foundation Board. Additionally, Dr. Olson has recently received the honor and privilege of serving as the Treasurer of the Neurosurgeons of New Jersey, P.C. as well as the President of the New Jersey State Society of Neurological Surgeons.

Throughout his 15 years in New Jersey, Dr. Olson has earned many accolades and awards, including Best Doctors listing 2007 to present, New Jersey Magazine Top Doctors listing 2011 to present and America’s Top Surgeons listing 2007 to present. Dr. Olson was honored by the Women’s Council of the Leon Hess Cancer Center, receiving their award for distinguished medical service to the community as well as special commendation and Senate Resolution from the New Jersey State Senate for “meritorious and exemplary service to the citizens of the State of New Jersey.”
