When the Society of University Neurosurgeons (SUN) convened in Lima, Peru, last month, the conversation was not merely academic—it was a strategic effort to solve the most difficult challenges in modern neurosurgery. Among the global experts driving these discussions were three neurosurgeons from Neurosurgeons of New Jersey, who returned home this month to apply those international insights to local patient care.
The SUN meeting, which has gathered leaders from major academic medical centers since 1965, serves as a critical forum for debating surgical techniques that define modern standards of care. His research focused on better predicting which children will achieve the best outcomes from ‘selective dorsal rhizotomy’—a procedure used to reduce severe muscle stiffness. He specifically examined how ‘intrathecal baclofen trials’ (predictive tests performed before surgery) help families make more informed, patient-specific decisions about their child’s long-term mobility.
- Clinical Synthesis: Dr. David Estin participated in the meeting’s scientific sessions, engaging with neurosurgeons from leading institutions worldwide to synthesize new findings for the local practice.
