Dr. Alfred Ogden kindly donated his time to teach Columbia University Neurosurgery Residents in a cadaver lab this semester.
According to Columbia Neurosurgery resident Gaurav Gupta, M.D.: “Everyone had an excellent experience. These cadaver labs are a critical part of resident training. The fact that experienced attendings such as Dr. Ogden are willing to donate their weekend to participate in resident education is one of many reasons that Columbia is a premier neurosurgery residency program.
We begin each session by reviewing the anatomy and techniques for surgical procedures, and then spend hours practicing and refining our technique under the close supervision of an attending neurosurgeon.
The cadaver lab facility is equipped with the latest technology including intraoperative fluoroscopy, high definition video monitors, and an operating microscope. Operating in the cadaver lab setting allows residents and attendings to mutually gain confidence before they work together in the operating room.
We plan to have a complete cadaver lab series this year, including cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine approaches, and anterior, middle, and posterior fossa cranial approaches. Additionally we are hoping to have a peripheral nerve lab. Together these will give us a truly comprehensive experience in neurosurgical anatomy.
