About Dr. Alfred T. Ogden

Dr. Alfred T. Ogden is a board-certified neurosurgeon internationally recognized for minimally invasive spine surgery and spinal tumor treatment. He treats common conditions such as spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, and herniated discs in addition to complex spinal problems. With over 30 publications and multiple awards, Dr. Ogden delivers conservative, expert, compassionate care to restore mobility and quality of life.

Meet Dr. Ogden

Dr. Alfred T. Ogden is a board-certified neurosurgeon and recognized leader in minimally invasive spine surgery, cervical spine treatment, and advanced care for complex spinal disorders. Widely regarded for his expertise in treating spondylolisthesis, degenerative spine disease, spinal cord tumors and spinal cord compression, he is consistently recognized among the best spine surgeons in New Jersey

Dr. Ogden provides a full spectrum of spine surgery services, including:

  • Minimally invasive lumbar fusion, including TLIF and related interbody fusion techniques
  • Cervical spine surgery such as disc replacement, ACDF (anterior cervical discectomy and fusion), cervical laminectomy, and treatment for cervical myelopathy and radiculopathy
  • Surgery for spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, herniated discs, and other complex spinal conditions
  • Pain-relieving procedures for cervical radiculopathy, lumbar radiculopathy, and nerve root compression

He has received numerous awards for his research and contributions, from a variety of organizations including Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, the New York Neurosurgical Society, the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons, and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Dr. Ogden has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications and 13 book chapters.

What sets Dr. Ogden apart is his commitment to patient education. He takes time to explain each patient’s condition, discuss treatment options, and set realistic recovery expectations. His approach focuses on maximizing quality of life while minimizing recovery time. Dr. Ogden practices at Neurosurgeons of New Jersey and maintains affiliations with The Valley Hospital, NYU/Langone Medical Center, and St. Joseph’s Health.

Training & Education

He received a BS in Biology from Yale University in 1993. After working as a research scientist at New York University in Developmental Genetics, he went on to medical school at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, along with being awarded Alpha Omega Alpha Honors. He was a member of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. He received a MD in 2000. Dr Ogden stayed at Columbia University Medical Center for his neurosurgery residency, then completed a fellowship in minimally invasive spine surgery at the University of Chicago and Northwestern. After fellowship, he returned to Columbia University Medical Center where he was an Assistant Professor in Neurological Surgery and the Director of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery for 11 years. He has recently left Columbia and is currently the Director of Minimally Invasive Spine surgery at Valley Hospital and Chief Medical Officer for Neurosurgeons of New Jersey.

His scholarly work on minimally invasive spine surgery and spinal tumors has appeared in numerous peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. He is a member of The Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. He has taught numerous courses on minimally invasive spine surgery to fellow neurosurgeons at national meetings and has been an invited speaker on this topic at numerous national and international meetings. He is a regular reviewer for Neurosurgery, Operative Neurosurgery, and the Journal of Neuro-Oncology.

He has been recognized for his surgical results and expertise by numerous independent quality evaluators including Castle Connolly Top Doctors, Press-Ganey, Vitals.com Patient’s Choice, Best Doctors, and 201 Magazine’s Best of Bergen.
